Beyond Mezcal: Discovering Mexican Mixology in Mexico City

There are many ways to discover Mexico. Some begin in front of an ancient pyramid, wandering through a market or walking the streets of a city. Others begin with a glass in hand. Behind Mexico’s spirits, liqueurs and aperitifs lies a world of ingredients, traditions and knowledge that tells us about the land, its communities and the country’s rich culinary heritage. Contemporary mixology has become an unexpected way to explore this world, offering an invitation to discover Mexico through the senses.

Every Ingredient Has a Place of Origin

Mexico is home to an extraordinary diversity of ingredients that form part of its culinary identity. Agave, citrus fruits, aromatic herbs, spices and local botanicals tell stories that begin long before they reach a bottle.

Mezcal, for example, connects us to different producing regions, the knowledge of mezcal makers and techniques passed down through generations. Contemporary aperitifs, meanwhile, reveal another side of this richness: the creativity of Mexican producers who reinterpret familiar ingredients to create new expressions.

Every aroma and flavor offers an opportunity to discover where what we are tasting comes from. And once we understand its origins, the experience changes. We stop perceiving it as simply a drink and begin to recognize the story behind it.

Mexican Mixology: Tradition Meets Creativity

Across Mexico, a new generation of producers and mixology professionals is exploring different ways to work with local ingredients. Traditional recipes coexist with contemporary techniques, while Mexican spirits find new companions in botanicals, fruits and preparations that surprise us with their aromas, textures and balance.

This evolution doesn't mean leaving our roots behind. On the contrary, it opens up new ways to appreciate them. A drink can spark curiosity about a plant that grows in a particular region, an unfamiliar artisanal process or the story of the person who created one of its ingredients. Mixology becomes a meeting point between gastronomy, culture and creativity, and perhaps its greatest appeal lies not only in the final result, but in everything we discover along the way.

An Experience That Begins with Curiosity

In Mexico City's Doctores neighborhood, Laguna brings together projects connected to design, art, gastronomy and creative production. Within this setting, The Mexican Spirit Experience brings together Primo Aperitivo and Mezcal Saltacielos for an exploration of Mexican flavors, hosted by Your Mexican Guide.

Here, participants are more than spectators. They explore aromas, learn about ingredients, discover bartending techniques and take part in creating their own cocktails, guided by a mixology specialist. The process invites them to observe, experiment and ask questions. Why does one ingredient transform the flavor of another? What distinguishes an artisanal spirit? How can an aroma evoke a place we've never visited?

The answers emerge through tastings, preparations and conversations that connect participants with a lesser-known side of Mexican culture. What begins as a cocktail-making activity can become a much broader cultural experience. And perhaps that's what makes it so interesting: discovering that behind every cocktail are ingredients, people and knowledge that tell a story about Mexico.

What Remains After the Last Sip

We often remember our travels through unexpected moments: a conversation with a local, a flavor we've never experienced before or a story that changes how we understand a tradition. Food and drink experiences have the power to bring all these elements together in a single encounter.

Our guests may arrive eager to learn how to make Mexican cocktails and leave with something different: new questions, new knowledge and a broader perspective on Mexico's cultural richness. Because getting to know a country also means discovering how its people transform what the land provides, preserve their knowledge and find new ways to express their identity.

Sometimes, discovering another side of Mexico begins simply by looking beyond what's in our glass.
